It's all about the food for General Conference Weekend!

If I, and the kids, and my husband have some good food to eat, we are more likely to stay awake and listen to General Conference.

I've tried all the different methods to keep kids entertained during general conference- coloring, journals, activity packets, games, new crayons or markers etc. Nothing really works. But FOOD does.

My kids' favorite: is bowls of different foods - yogurt covered pretzels, candy, popcorn, favorite cold cereal (without the milk), goldfish crackers, etc.
Each bowl of food has a church picture or word on it.
Like: Family, Temple, Jesus, Faith, etc. When a general conference speaker says one of those words they can take 1 item from the bowl and eat it! They have fun, and they actually seem to listen. Of course they run off and do other things, fight eachother, etc. But overall they seem to listen better with this game. They also love when we have a picnic on a blanket in front of the tv during a session.

This year I want to try:
Homemade Cinnamon Rolls and
Breakfast Casserole
(Both of these recipes are from Our Best Bites)

Try is the key word, it is ambitious. But it's the weekend; Chris will be around to help, and both recipes require that I make them at night after most of the kids have gone to bed.

Here is another recipe that I love and have done a few times before:

These Rhodes rolls that you can buy in the freezer section of the grocery store;
never seem to work for me.

I can't get them to rise.

My sister, Molly, always says,
"Make sure the plastic wrap touches the frozen rolls." But, it never works.

When I need fancy, dinner rolls,
I just buy rolls in the pre-made bread section of the grocery store instead.

But, Chris, my husband, taught me something great you can do with these frozen rolls.
Make scones! It doesn't even seem to matter if they rise or not.

Follow the thawing directions on the package of the rolls.

(If you want them for breakfast, it means you have to get up at a crazy hour like 5 am to make sure they thaw in time. I hardly ever make this recipe because of that. It works great when you wake up at an unexpected hour and can't get back to sleep, like when you're pregnant.)

Then when they have thawed for an adequate time, get out your frying pan and pour in some vegetable oil. I don't measure the oil, usually I just barely fill the bottom of the pan.
Heat the oil on med-high. for a couple of min.? I just guess. I'm no cooking expert at all.

Then take one of your pieces of dough,
stretch it out to about the size of your palm and lay it in the hot oil.

Cook for about 30-45 sec. per side. I usually keep the heat on med-high.
If the dough seems to brown/burn too quickly I lower the heat a little.
Use metal tongs to flip it from side to side.
When it is brown on both sides, lay the scone on a paper towel lined plate to cool slightly.

Then serve with your choice of fresh fruits, syrup, lemon juice, powdered sugar, whip cream,
chocolate syrup, nutella, etc. I think they taste delicious. It is easy to eat 2-3 of these scones. Or 4, 5, 6, or 7!

This recipe makes a great tradition for general conference weekend.
Something fairly easy to cook up, and a fun tradition to eat while watching
a Sat. or Sun. am/pm conference session.

Katie--ever used Rhodes rolls to make Navajo Tacos? Fry them up exactly as you explained in your post, then serve with taco meat (or western beans), cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. Fun way to switch up a taco night--I always set out the honey butter and jam for kiddos that just want a scone! Have fun with the cinnamon rolls! I enjoy making them--and fall weather always puts me in the mood to bake!

Katie - I am so glad I saw you at the store. I did the scones thanks to you, and they were a HIT!

Better yet was the idea of all the bulk food snacks! I had 6 bowls and gave each one two key words. The kids absolutely LOVED this game! We did it for both Sunday Sessions (you should have seen how curious they were as I was preparing... the first thought I was doing some weird version of Bingo, and were thrilled when they realized I had a NEW game for them!). Thank you!
