A Story to Share

In the 1950's polio was a great concern. It often left you paralyzed. One day a mother of 2 who was newly pregnant with her 3rd baby; began feeling ill. After going to the doctor, she was diagnosed with polio.  She was in a great deal of pain suffering from the illness. While at the hospital, the doctors explained to her she would need to abort her baby. She didn't know at the time what an abortion was.   Her parents who lived near her advised her to follow the dr's orders since she had 2 other children who needed a healthy mother at home.  She prayed a great deal to know what to do. That night, she had a dream. A dream of a beautiful, healthy baby girl. The next morning when her husband came to visit with her, he also felt they should keep the baby.  The couple faced a great deal of opposition from the hospital with their decision.

Later when the polio had subsided, her arms were paralyzed.  She wondered how she would hold her new baby, and take care of her family. A priesthood blessing was administered. During the blessing she felt someone touch her arm.  She regained the use of one of her arms, after a lot of therapy. Later a healthy baby girl was born to her and her family.  A little baby named Rebecca, my mother.

The wonderful lady in this story is my grandmother, who went on to live a great life dedicated to her family. I will always be grateful for her faith, her prayers, her example, and her devotion to her family.
She is a great, great lady. I'm lucky to be one of her grandchildren and part of her posterity.
She has since passed on, and all of her family and extended family miss her. It is her b-day today.

My aunt posted about this story on her blog.
It is my grandmother's own words.

I love this story! A perfect birthday tribute! Our Mom always said like her Mom said to her to judge her by how her grandchildren turn out. I would say she would get a pretty high judgement! She has a wonderful posterity--you included!

I always like to hear that story. I'm sure it's extra special to you since it's your mom.

I was thinking about Grandma the other day when I was carrying a kid or two and still trying to do something with my arms. I was remembering that she had to do all that with only the use of one arm. She was certainly amazing.
